Beta Carotene

Description: Beta carotene is one of many carotenoids which are naturally occuring pigments. It is one of the most active of carotenes. Sources include dark green leafy vegetables and yellow-orange fruits and vegetables.

Beta carotene is a provitamin which undergoes an enzymatic process to release molecules of retinol (Vitamin A).

Properties: Antioxidant. Converted into vitamin A. Lowers risk of cancer. Antitumor and immune-enhancing activity.

Cautions: Unlike vitamin A, high doses of carotenes have not been shown to possess significant toxicity. However, increased carotene consumption can result in the appearance of slightly yellow to orange colored skin due to the storage of carotenes in epithelial cells. This is a benign condition.
